English Language Learning at Liceo Javier: Forming Global Citizens through Jesuit Education

In today’s rapidly changing world, students must acquire not only academic knowledge but also critical life competencies that enable them to adapt, collaborate, and lead. Among these, multilingual communication stands out as an essential 21st-century skill. Although English is not the most widely spoken native language, it functions as the dominant lingua franca—facilitating global dialogue, expanding academic access, and enhancing professional mobility.

At Liceo Javier, we recognize the central role English plays in this global landscape. Rooted in the Jesuit tradition of cura personalis, critical reflection, and service to others, our English program is designed to support the integral development of each student. We focus on cultivating functional language use and deep comprehension across content areas, adapting instructional strategies to both learners’ cognitive development and their language proficiency levels.

From Preschool through 5th grade, students engage in research-based, age-appropriate methodologies such as Total Physical Response (TPR), Task-Based Learning (TBL), and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). These approaches foster language acquisition through interaction, movement, and concept-driven content. Additionally, students in Grades 1–3 benefit from targeted instruction in our Language Lab, where they practice the four core skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—in small groups through differentiated learning centers. Formative assessments guide instruction to support mastery and personalized reinforcement.
Beginning in 6th grade and continuing through V Bachillerato (12th grade), students are placed in leveled groups based on an internationally validated English placement test aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Instruction during these years is framed by the Communicative Approach, prioritizing purposeful language use, interpersonal interaction, and contextualized practice to foster fluency and autonomy.

In Bachillerato, students continue to refine their skills with a focus on oral communication and project-based learning, depending on their proficiency level. By the end of V Bachillerato, all students take the TOEFL ITP exam. A significant number achieve scores that allow them to bypass introductory English courses at the university level, demonstrating their readiness for academic work in English.

At Liceo Javier, English is more than a subject—it is a transformative journey. Our dedicated English team guides students through a holistic, student-centered experience that integrates receptive and productive skills using engaging, relevant, contextualized, and meaningful content. Grounded in Ignatian values, this program empowers learners to meet the demands of the modern world with linguistic competence, cultural awareness, and a sense of ethical responsibility—ready to serve as reflective and compassionate global citizens.
